What Is A Victim Survey

Victim surveys are given to a wide range of people in different areas to get statistics about crime. Depending on the type of questions asked you can get a better understanding of what happens in which areas (the use of open and closed questions) by using open questions you can give the participant room to give a more detailed answer and by using closed questions you can get a more specific answer to meet the data you want, for example ‘have you ever been robbed’ being a closed question the answers received from this will allow others to know how many robbery’s go on in the area.
When assessing these surveys you must always take into account the follow; people may lie in their answers to get attention or may just over exaggerated the situation effecting the results. You also need to consider that some crimes never get reported as victims can be embarrassed (for example if they have been raped) or feel that the crime is not important enough (for example someone stole something from your garden)
However advantages of these surveys are; you may be able to uncover crimes that have not been reported and get more detailed statistics on the littler crimes that don’t get reported. They provide essential information that can be open to the public so you are able to see the crime rates in your area or an area you wish to move to. The survey allows for analysts to see the crime from the victim’s side and how it affected them giving more detailed information on crime.
